They work much like a solid rivet, joining leather, canvas, fabric, and similar substrates and carrying both shear and tension loads, but a small hole in the tip makes them noticeably easier to set by hand, a favorite for leatherwork, tack, and repairs. That hollow tip is the key. As the rivet is set, the open end flares and spreads outward against the back of the material, clinching the joint tight and forming an effective pivot point. Tubular Rivets are similar to solid rivets, except they have a partial hole (opposite the head) at the tip. The purpose of this hole is to reduce the amount of force needed for application by rolling the tubular portion outward. An installed tubular rivet has a head on one side, with a rolled over and exposed shallow blind hole on the other.
